Man Dies From Injuries After Setting Himself On Fire Near The White House

United States Park Police identified the man as 33-year-old Arnav Gupta, of Bethesda, Maryland. Gupta died from his injuries at an area hospital on Wednesday evening.

Gupta was reported missing on Wednesday morning and was last seen by his family when he left his Cindy Lane home in Bethesda.

Montgomery County Police reported they were concerned for Gupta’s “physical and emotional welfare.”

Authorities say an investigation into the incident has been turned over to Metropolitan Police.

On Wednesday afternoon, U.S. Park Police and Secret Service agents responded to the report of a man who reportedly lit himself on fire at the Ellipse near 15th and Constitution Avenue.

First responders were able to extinguish Gupta and he was taken to the hospital. A Secret Service officer was also transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The Ellipse is a park just south of the White House, where the National Christmas Tree is located.
