Fake coupons offering “people of color” 75% off any Nike purchase.
Nike has alerted their retail locations around the country to be aware of fake “people of color” coupons that bear the image of their new “Just Do It” campaign star, Colin Kaepernick.
According to reports, the fugazzi discount coupons that have been circulating were said to have initially been posted on image-sharing website 4chan. One of the coupons calls for consumers “To show solidarity with the things WE believe in we are offering people of color 75% off any purchase of Nike’s shoes or apparel.”
USA Today reports that the barcode featured on one of the coupons came up as “invalid” when they took it to a Nike store in the Washington, D.C., area.
Some of those coupons (as detailed here) included a QR code that when scanned read, “This is a ROBBERY, Move slowly and put all the LARGE bills in the shoe box OR everyone DIES.” That said, USA Today notes Nike’s point-of-sale systems aren’t equipped to read QR codes, which means the robbery message would not have appeared even if an associate ran the coupon.
Nike has since sent alerts to each of its retail locations in the U.S. to warn employees of the hoax.
