Cop Found Guilty For Murdering 15-Year-Old Jordan Edwards In Rare Conviction

Former Texas police officer Roy Oliver has been found guilty by a jury of the murder of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards, reports the Associated Press.

Edwards and his 16-year-old brother were on their way home in the Dallas, Texas suburb of Balch Springs in April 2017 when Oliver killed Edwards. The death was ruled a homicide by the Dallas County medical examiner.

Oliver, at the time an officer with the Balch Springs Police Department, fired into the car Edwards was in with a rifle. He was fired by the department not long after the shooting.

The jury declared its guilty verdict on the second day of deliberations in a Dallas County courtroom on Tuesday.

Jurors  deliberated for 12 hours total, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Despite Oliver’s testimony that he fired the weapon because he thought his partner was in danger, his partner testified he didn’t fear for his life and believed using such force was unnecessary. The two officers had been called to the scene due to a noise complaint.

Oliver received a “not guilty” verdict on two counts of aggravated assault in relation to the shooting.

“I’m happy, very happy. It’s been a long time, a hard year,” said Jordan’s father, Odell Edwards, who said he wanted to “jump up and down” after hearing the verdict, according to NBC News.
